Wie funktioniert ein Wiki?

Olivier Creiche und ich sind gerade auf der CeBIT in Hannover. Im Rahmen der Enterprise 2.0 Summit erklärt Euan Semple, BBC, gerade eben wie Corporate Blogging und Wikis bei BBC zur internen Kommunikation genutzt werden. Ein Beispiel zur Veranschaulichung der Wiki-Funktionalität finde ich besonders beeindruckend:

Using Twitter for research purposes

Having in mind that lots of people from all over the world are using Twitter to express themselves it is somehow obvious that this data could be also a very interesting source for research purposes.

I made a simple attempt by investigating the user reactions on the currently hyped Macbook Air. Therefore I used Terraminds to search for "Macbook Air". The sample consists of 50 Tweets, showing positive or negative reactions after using the Macbook Air. 'Using' in this experiment means at least having the chance to touch it. The Tweets [one single Post/Update], English or German, have been published between Feb-07 and Feb-11.

The outcome of this short investigation can be seen as a kind of meta result of micro macbook air reviews. The result of the discussed laptop is very positive (n=50, positive=40, negative=10).

Conclusion: Although currently Twitter is probably used by a very specific group of persons (internet savvy people) I would assume there is huge potential to use it for research purposes in different fields (e.g. market research, cultural studies, sociology, etc.). Using this resource holds very specific advantages. One fact is the worldwide population. Retrieving the data is very easy and low priced. In addition, as this method is a kind of online-observation, it overcomes the interview bias.

Guy Kawasaki moderiert ein hochkarätig besetztes Panel zum Thema Angel Investment:

• "Andy Bechtolsheim. Andy has a heart-stopping track record. First, he was a co-founder of Sun Microsystems. Then he founded Granite Systems (gigabit Ethernet switches) which Cisco bought. Then he founded Kealia (server technology) which Sun bought. He is an angel investor in Magma Design Automation (electronic design automation). Oh yeah, he was also the first investor in Google when he wrote a check for Larry and Sergei in 1998—before they had a bank account to deposit it in. To put it mildly, he the uber angel investor of angel investors. He is currently the chief architect of Sun.

• Ron Conway. Ron is the "godfather of Silicon Valley." He is the former managing partner of Angel Investors LP. He has invested in over 500 startups and has personal investments in RockYou, Twitter, Plaxo, Digg, and DanceJam. He is also an advisor to FaceBook. Oh yeah, he was also an early investor in Google.

• Dr. Ian Sobieski. Ian is a founder and managing director of the Band of Angels Fund. This is a $50 million fund that receives approximately 100 pitches per month. A screening committee then selects three companies to present at the Band's monthly meeting. The Band has invested in 240 companies and has had more than forty profitable acquisition exits and nine IPOs."

In den letzten Jahren wurde oft von den Staedten New York, London und Berlin gesprochen wenn es um elektronische Musik ging. Diese Dokumentation argumentiert, dass nun Paris wieder ganz oben ist, liefert einen interessanten Einblick in die Szene und fuer mich einen weiteren Grund noch ein Weilchen hier zu bleiben :-)

Internet am Körper?

Kurzer Rückblick: Internet startete mit der Verknüpfung von Großrechnern. Danach waren es Standcomputer die mit dem Internet verbunden wurden. Laptops und vor allem Wi-Fi machten das Internet in den ersten Formen mobil. Mit Hilfe von Handhelds, iPhones, etc. hat man heute die Möglichkeit das Internet in der Tasche immer mit dabei zu haben und ist damit bereits allgegenwärtig.

Was ist der nächste Schritt? Wann wird unser Körper direkt mit dem Internet verbunden sein? Diskussionen zu diesem Thema gibt es ja schon seit Jahren und sind oft eng verbunden mit der Idee, dass dem Menschen ein Chip implantiert wird. Es könnte aber viel einfacher und angenehmer gehen.

Die University of Washington hat es geschafft eine Linse mit eingebauten Head-Up Display zu entwickeln. Denkbar wäre also, dass Menschen ständig mit Hilfe der Linse die Möglichkeit haben sich mit dem Internet zu verbinden und so mittels des Head-Up Displays der Linse direkt in Kommunikation treten können.

Die beste Halle um in Paris Billard zu spielen

Eine frühere Brasserie, entstanden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Eine beeindruckende Atmosphäre um Billard zu spielen. Pass nicht vergessen: Diesen muss man beim Eintritt abgeben.

"Formerly a brasserie built in 1880, this building then became a stable during the Second World War, and is today the most pleasant billiard hall in the capital. The ceiling is no less than 8 metres high! 16 tables (8 American billiards, 5 French billiards, one snooker, 2 pool) as well as a mini-casino. The Academy (which isn't a billiards school although if you keep your ears open you can learn a lot) is frequented by amateurs and professionals. Open till the small hours (6am!)...so you can miss the peak times."

Innovation Unit
As part of the aggressive growth program, EP is setting up a new innovation unit. Its key mandate is to develop innovative new products, services and business models. Thereby ideas should be developed into proven concepts - including prototypes and business plans. To be clear, the innovation unit is not another R&D facility, but much more business oriented. For technical tasks it will collaborate intensively with EP's existing R&D facilities. Additional responsibilities of the innovation unit are to identify and come up with own ideas and build an external innovation network.

Role for Business Developement Manager
The key role of the business development manager is to drive the commercial and business plan development for a given innovation. This involves coming up with a viable business model, assessing the economic attractiveness of the innovation as well as the underlying market, building a financial model as well as talking to and interviewing potential customers and commercial employees of EP. Overall, a strong business sense and commercial judgement are key! Moreover, the commercial development of an innovation needs to happen in close collaboration with technical team members, be it scientists or engineers.

Experience, Personality & Language Skills
We are looking for candidates with a university degree and at least 3-5 years working experience in commercial functions - be it in business development, strategic marketing or sales within an industrial firm or in management consulting. Moreover, candidates should have an interest and understanding for technical products. Overall he or she needs to show very practical and pragmatic skills and not be theoretical. In terms of personality traits, the following ones are key for all people joining EP's innovation unit: be intrinsically motivated, youthful, a team player, flexible & versatile, entrepreneurial, inquisitive, creative and out-of-the box thinking, enduring and able to deal with failure and continue. English will be the working language and skills in French and German beneficial.

Location & Timing
The innovation unit is located in Switzerland and starts to operate as of Q1/2008. We are looking for one business development manager, to start as early as Q1/2008 and other ones to join later in 2008.
